INTEGRATOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Make incredible leaps in productivity and growth. Find your integrator.

Managing People, Process and Metrics:

An effective Integrator must be adept at providing direction to the team, managing the company scorecard and monitoring performance against key metrics. In doing so they keep everyone on the same page and create a level of harmony amongst the team. By ensuring day-to-day tasks run smoothly, and the company operating system is followed by all, they should quickly become the “glue” holding the team together.

People Development / Coaching / Mentoring:

A leader that develops others possesses a higher level of skill and ability than those who are only managing for performance. At this level, the Integrator must be able to gain understanding of other roles in the company beyond their own, help team members establish growth goals for themselves and create development plans. An Integrator who excels in this area will develop strong trust relationships with team members improving employee retention and improving culture.

Organizational Development:

Organizational Development in terms of the Integrator role pertains to structure. “Are we structured in a manner that will best serve our market?” Another way to think of this is in terms of right seats. Do we have the right seats to best serve our current customers, future customers and our own goals for the business? Being effective at Organizational Development requires an Integrator with an ability to see across all functional areas of the business, as well as having perspective outside the business i.e. customers, markets.

Business Planning:

Integrators at this level have a full grasp of the business model, understanding how the business operates internally as well as how the company engages externally with customers, partners, suppliers et al. An Integrator at this level will be adept at taking big ideas from the Visionary and breaking them down into executable strategies. Understanding how each of the functional areas Inter-operate is critical for business planning and Integrators with strong abilities here will most likely have previous experience as a General Manager (all functions reporting to them).

Partner/Advisor:

At the top of the continuum the Integrator becomes a true partner and even advisor to the Visionary. A core ability to think strategically, combined with previous experience in General Management roles allow them to play devil’s advocate for the Visionary. They are able to share strategies and tactics that have worked well (or not) in their earlier experiences. They also have an ability to pull in critical information from outside the business such as customer/market data, industry trends and best practices. Their overall ability and experience allows them to truly be the “Visionary Prozac” described in Rocket Fuel (Gino Wickman and Mark C. Winters).

Project Management:

Effective project management is a key expectation for any Integrator. This competency runs along the whole of the continuum because projects vary in size and complexity; Integrators with less experience and ability will be effective on smaller projects and more experienced, more capable Integrators will be able to handle higher level projects.
